I agree with what you say Liam. A good driver with an average engine will beat an average driver with a good engine any day.

To run at the front at a competitive club such as Kimbolton you do need a good engine. I had heard when we raced there in July that several front running club drivers were now hiring engines. They are all very good drivers but they still feel they would like the edge that one of the best rental engines will give them.

I have no problem with that. We all want to win within the rules and anyone can hire an engine so that is perfectly fair. The point I am trying to make is that this would not be happening if all the engines were equal.

This is not simply sour grapes on my part. Having owned at some stage over the last 20 odd years about 30 different engines we have ended up with a couple of very good engines that go some considerable way to making up for the fact we always use secondhand tyres.
