You are quite right that neck braces are not compulsory but to say there is no evidence, im sorry to say you are wrong.
Leatt has done a huge amount of medical research into the case for and against neck braces in all forms of motorsport and have found the case for far outweighs the case against.
A correctly fitted neck brace could save a neck from being broken wheter from a side, frontal or rear impact in the same circumstances where the neck would have definately been broken.
We had a driver involved in an accident at a circuit recently where her kart flipped. The medics that attended her told he that she was a very lucky girl as if she hadnt been wearing a neck brace in their opinion she would have broken he neck.
