There will always be some unintentional contact or 'racing incidents' - it's the nature of the sport, particularly when younger / less experienced drivers are involved. My problem is with intentional contact / ramming / loading or whatever you want to call it.

The MSA set the framework for the rules. It is up to the clubs to enforce or implement these rules. At club level, the concept of being able to appeal to a national court or the need to pay substantial amounts of money to lodge an appeal or protest is ludicrous.

The clubs should be empowered to implement their own sanctions against recurrent offenders, with the COC's able to enforce local variations of the rules and penalties.

Rather than a 'slap on the wrist' and a dressing down by the COC (which appears to have no effect on recurrent offenders), I would suggest that harsher penalties be applied.

If you are 'convicted' of intentional contact or dangerous driving, then you are disqualified from that heat (or given a formal warning if the offence occurs during practice sessions). A second offence means disqualification from the event and maybe an exclusion from the following race weekend at that club. If this happens on a practice day prior to a race day, then the offender is suspended from the whole race weekend and the subsequent meeting.

It is then up to the clubs to decide if they want to implement this - maybe consult the members ? The decision of the COC is final, with no recourse to national courts and expensive lawyers. Such clubs would get a reputation for clean driving and anyone that wants to play bumper cars would go and drive at a club that endorses such behaviour.

This comes from having watched some of the 'elite' cadet drivers in the country turn up at Rissy last weekend and play 'bash the clubbie' - always starting at the back of the dummy grid in practice sessions and subsequently smashing their way through to the front. Several of these drivers got called up in front of the COC and got a dressing down only to go out and keep on doing it again. This included trying to drive some of the 'locals' off the track after the chequered flag had been shown at the end of a practice session. They also seemed to enjoy taking out their own team members.

If a particular team's drivers consistently offend, then perhaps the suspension could be applied to the whole team.

If national series wish to condone dangerous and dirty driving (also known as cheating....) then so be it. However, if we start cleaning up our act at club level, then perhaps good driving and exciting, hard fought but clean racing would filter up to the exalted heights of the national series in this country and go some way to repairing the somewhat tarnished image of behaviour in British karting.
