Apologies for the long post but this is probably our heart felt parting ditty! We have retired after 6 years in karting from non MSA cadet karting (probably our happiest time) through to club MSA Rotax inc. winning a club championship, breaking lap record and many good results against teams from a lad an dad team. Got to blow your own trumpet!!
We will remember religiously going every other Monday evening to racing for buttons at PFI, with an old Mari B1 WTP, throughout the whole year, rain or shine, remember my lad coming in with snow all over him and moaning 'why have they stopped the race I want to carry on' !! The non MSA racing in WTP cadets - great place to cut your teeth - recommend it to all and would not recommend going straight into MSA from the start. Racing with an old B1 WTP at 10KG less than the B5's, having to learn very late braking to compete against the B5's, got a B5 for Christmas pressy then on the pace with late braking learnt, won loads of races, had a great time. Moved onto MSA minimax, struggled first season, nearly gave up then got our first podium and never looked back following season, beat teams, got lap record, really quick in the wet also, all with probably oldest chassis on the grid. Juniormax this season, reasonably quick first half of season, got second fastest lap of the year. Went off the boil later on. retire!
I never wanted to give up, love the time with my lad, love the engineering side; testing tweaking moving in the right direction with effort, gets us away for the weekend. Just been so difficult last few months off the pace and don't know why - tried everything we know but losing time, money, and patience, lad unhappy with where we were at - we don't care if we win or not - we just want a race, a close race. One of our most memorable (for us) moments was at Non MSA WTP at a GP meeting; the lead changed 5 times on a 38 sec last lap, my lad won but even if he hadn't we would have remembered it.
I raced grass track cars in my youth, I had a normal healthy childhood / teenage years, but the most I remember and will always remember is racing and racing with my dad's support and with my family with me. I can see it will be the same for my lad - such good memories. Hopefully he will provide the same for his family when he has one be it in karting or whatever they enjoy.
My lad doesn't want to give up - but does for the usual reasons listed on previous posts also. We have made so many great friends at karting and many have either commiserated with us or tried to get us to continue, both of which has been very difficult to take - Q big lump in throat, watery eyes!! My lad is the usual teenager - occasionally communicates with grunts, dad is a retard, usual stuff, but he is good lad at heart. He posted the following on the usual t'internet social thingy alternative to the pub / loitering with mates place, I nearly / did start blubbing Q big lump in throat again, when a karting friend showed me the message with a comment from him - that reading the message; my lad doesn't want to give up!! - 'the time has come to end my karting dream maybe not for ever but for a long time it hasn't been easy decision. The amazing friends I have made from karting I will never forget you are all amazing. The memories I've got from the sport I will never forget, there's been ups and downs but I wouldn't swap it for the world. It is the most amazing sport I have ever done and you'll get nothing like it. When you get into karting it is not just a weekend thing it isn't just a hobby and it isn't just a dream it's your life. I have to thank my mum and dad for being the most amazing parents I could ask for supporting me in everything I've done I couldn't ask for more and I'm extremely privileged thank you. So good luck to everyone and hope it all goes well for you.' The reasons - but looking back they feel more like 'excuses' for giving up are, cost, time, effort required, need to spend time and money with the rest of the family that don't kart, he needs to concentrate on his studies, being off the pace in the last few months and possibly having to spend a fortune on equipment and advice to get back on the pace. These are all the reasons listed before and also the common ones - mates not interested in karting, we are out racing / testing when his mates are out doing other stuff etc etc.
Second half on next post as it won't seem to accept the whole post!!!
