Although i don't wish to wade too deep into this discussion, I'm with NJB. But you add my experience.
I've almost always sent the driver on their way after the debrief walk back to the tent and changed things without telling them (to negate the placebo effect). And everything has done what I expected it to, the expectation coming from my personal driving experience.
Sometimes the driver hangs around and you have to tell them you're taking the axle out to clean it then swap it when they are not looking.
Must admit I've also told the driver what i think it will do to make him/her drive faster and I've also not changed anything and told them I have (to test their feedback) and in one case that I did do that they told me straight out (very vexed) that I hadn't changed anything.
