I'm getting conflicting advice on what genny rating is needed for a given Air Compressor. On the one hand I've been told that I need a genny with 3x rating of the air compressor as this is what it draws at start-up. On the other hand I see lots of setups in the paddock where people are no where near 3x. For example one guy has a 2.8KW peak power genny driving a 2 HP compressor. On the basis of 1HP = 0.75KW and applying the 3x guidance, this compressor should require a genny of 4.5KW but, it starts just fine.

So, is this 3x rating valid and if not, what is the correct min peak KW rating of a genny for a given air compressor ?
