I guess it really depends on the events at the time. We had a series of meetings last year when a certain driver went from 3rd (by some margin) to winning by 1/2 a lap over night.
It took 2 meetings and loads of stink being kicked up to get the engine stripped.......suffices to say, things weren't as they should be.
On the other side of the coin at the last meeting my lad was pulling out a lead of 18+ seconds in the wet on a very green track and we run 100% legal (no point in cheating) so I guess some could say we should be checked?
Having said this we were racing at a grass roots club meeting but the principle still applies.
I'd say if it was obvious that the performance was not as it should be then the driver should get pulled & checked, if its just lapping quicker it's a harder call, especially if its down to conditions.
