Thanks for the replies everyone. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have actually answered the questions, or if they have, I've missed them!

Will an RCD work on a standard portable generator?
If not, can it be made to work by:
(a) grounding the genny chassis to earth by an awning stake and a cable and ensuring there is continuity between the chassis and the earth "pin" of the socket outlet
(b)As above plus linking neutral to earth

Some of the replies suggest it's safer just leaving the genny the way it is, with a floating earth. Is that correct?

I'm thinking of taking the RCD out of circuit for the time being but if it can be made to work and will provide additional protection then I will keep it/modify the setup as necessary.
