Interesting reading all the comments above - can relate to this!! Being an Accountant by trade I have not been able to resist myself in keeping track of "what it costs" - I know, I know I need help, must get out more! ha First full season of owner/driver karting and I just did the one meeting a month (busy life outside of karting alas) through the year March to October - all in costs were £3,900.... This cost did include awning space with a team which if I take out c£1,300 equates to £2,600. That covered tyres, fuel, consumables, race entries sat/sun - luckily for me my track was half hour drive form home so relatively short distance to travel. I tried to be very strict on cost only spending what I needed to, I have been relatively lucky in terms of damage repair costs - nothing major thankfully - its the unknown, unbudgeted costs which bite you when you least expect or want it! At season end I needed a full rebuild which was £810 (included new clutch upgrade). For those starting out I would say add another £2,500 onto the cost above to cover a decent 2nd hand outkit, so year 1 cost would be in the region of £5,000 with subsequent years anywhere between £2,500 and £3,500 dependent on how you managed your race calendar. All interesting reading though, at end of the day its simply not a cheap hobby - there is no such thing as cheap motorsport and anyone saying that about whatever class they race in are deluding themselves.
