Having a small son as well I have had the same problem as many others. Although he is now well within the weight range. However, I would be more concerned if i placed him in a kart and he really wasn't big enough to drive it safely.
The weight limit is an issue admittedly but surely it is there to prevent kids driving karts that are either simply too big for them or are too fast. The weights are pretty generous....and clear. In Mini max- Kart no more than 98 kg and driver (excluding rib protector) no less than 37kg. Sadly if not big enough try for a different class.
