Easy,

Due to the "lifting" affect of the Helium you had less weight on the rear axles therefore allowing the engine to "spin up" easier. The negative of this is obviously, as you found out, when entering into a corner you have less "weight" on the frot and therefore the tyres struggle to "bite" into the track and turn.
