New Rotax Barrels are a very safe bet at the moment. New 2011 cylinders are very good out the box and seem to be quite close in performance. Theres always slightly better ones but these days the average engine is a lot closer to the best. Despite this, i've seen quite a few older spec barrels have an advantage at some circuits. The 2004, 06 & 07 seem to be the ones that can still compete against the new ones. since the CNC in 2009, new barrels have more bottom end grunt than previous so their easier to race against an 07 etc. Hope this helps and once again, depends how competitive you want to be.
