Can't help feeling sorry for Sheninton for getting all this flack over a trophy when out governing body and the FIA appear to support initiatives aimed just at women. Back in March 2011 there was a selection process to select a young female to try for a `female only' fully funded drive in the Academy trophy (details below).

"The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has nominated Hannah Pym as the UK’s representative in a competition backed by the FIA’s Women and Motor Sport Commission that will result in one female karter earning a fully-funded drive in this year’s CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy.

The MSA was asked to put forward a female karter aged 13-15 for the initiative. The top 10 nominated drivers will take part in a shootout in Geneva on 26-27 April, which will comprise both on- and off-track activities. The driver adjudged to have demonstrated the greatest potential will receive a free entry to the Karting Academy Trophy, along with a free kart and overalls.

MSA Women in Motorsport Group Chairman, Sue Sanders, said: “Hannah is an experienced, well-rounded and mature young karter with a strong CV, and I am sure that she will represent the UK with distinction. I would also like to pay tribute to Gaby Weyer and Alana Taylor who missed out on this nomination; they are two promising talents with bright futures ahead of them.”

Now, maybe this is not strictly in line with sexism policy for the politically correct but it could be for the long-term benefit of karting.
