I think you can be + or - 2 links I normally slide the engine forward and check the slack
Note If you have a slightly bent axle the chain will tighten and loosen as you rotate it.
Don't put the engine stop right up to the mounting block leave a few mm gap and lock it.

I suppose if you set up the Karts corner weights and have the engine set in an optimum position then chain length gets critical.
