I did mention the speed limits... but what I should have said was the RTA. Closing the roads is very easy to do on the Island of Great Britain... but suspension of the RTA while they're closed is not so easy. One of the main problems with a motorsport event being held on a closed road with the RTA in place [as opposed to a march/protest etc...] is the speed limit. In Ireland [North and South] it's quite straightforward to suspend the RTA when the roads are closed and that's why there's such a big motorsport scene on closed roads there... although not much karting [if any ?] these days on closed roads.

Check out the famous Phoenix Park motor races in Dublin... they ran Superkarts here one year [1986] and the speeds were absolutely unbelievable. Austin Bishop did one of those speed boat flips half way down the straight at well over 100mph... surrounded by trees.
