I agree with the theory above. However I noticed that teams are still using the full mag in cold dry weather (just above 0 degrees) as the full mag conduct better the heat and very constant (once you managed to put the heat in them). I think the aly ones for slicks are utilised in the damp conditions when half of the grid is on slick and the other half on dry, in the condition where it is a struggle to put heat in the tyres.

There is also another factor I heard on the material of rims: the full mag give you a softer rear than half mag and than aly.
