you are underselling the sport.

There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of children who test out karting on a regular basis. Buckmore Park for example regularl runs races for grids over 40 strong.

About 1000 a year then choose to enter the more competitive end of the sport. It's probably on a par with many other sports. The TV did a programme recently on a table tennis player who was an Olympic hopeful who was spending around Ł20k over the next year.

Another person of my acquaintance is in to sailing, a sport which consumes even more money than karting. He was telling me that his sails last about as long as a set of Rotax slicks...but at up to Ł1500 a set or more. (They aren't worn out, but they are that tiny bit off the pace) and the person who owns a horse tells me it would be cheaper if she could persuade it to eat Ł5 notes instead. ( A set of aluminium shoes lasts for only one event). She also tells me that she knows everyone in her sport who has a serious chance of making good....all twenty five of them.
