Davidmc, you are absolutely correct that the steering must be centred, and I must confess that I couldn't fully follow your method description; but surely it would only work 100% accurately if the steering column was central and not offset? With the column offset the point at which reversal occurs would be slightly different each side. But perhaps this is so small a difference that it can be ignored?
