Sticky bendix is the most likely culprit.

Caused by using a chain lube that spends its time infiltrating chain guards and bendix mechanisms.

As Nigel says, give it a good clean.

You can't get it out without removing the clutch backplate but don't worry.

Then use a chainlube that doesn't fling everywhere like Putolin ceramic, brilliant stuff that stays where you put it, on the inside run of the chain.
