if you look at the video properly paul, from a drivers point of view, there is no flag point on the entrance to the corner off the pit straight, the leaders catch up with the backmarker just at the apex of the first part of the corner, the next flag point, where as you say he is readying the blue flag is too far around the corner for the backmarker to see as the leaders get to him, his eye line wont be at the flag point when the leaders come to lap him, so whether a blue flag is shown at that point is completely meaningless. for a blue flag to be effective it needs to be shown with a gap of between 10 and 20m between the backmarker and the leaders, so the backmarker has a chance to react and take appropriate action, as the last flag point before the corner off the pit straight is at the hairpin, which was too early for a blue flag, and the flag point into the final part of the S curve is too late, blue flags at both points would be completely inneffective.
