Previous post is spot on. Racing for Buttons scheme runs at PF track near Newark every Monday night from around 5.30pm with alternating weeks to turn up and get a run in their Honda kart or even better turn up with your own kart and get proper tutoring, practice and mini race experience from professionals.

My lad said the same thing to me when he was 7 so we booked him 30 minutes at PF during the summer holidays. I think this cost about £30. The smile on his face meant he was serious and we then progressed to Buttons.

It's a great way into the sport. After one night on their kart I knew I had to get him one and a few weeks later we where attending with our own kart - brilliant.

I know a lot of people don't like eBay but I think if you are carefull you can get get a bargain. e.g. we sold our first kart and engine on there for £500 and the guy keeps in touch and it goes really well.

As far as cadet class I would recommend doing the first 2 years in the Honda class. It's by far the easiest and cheapest engine to work with and you can just concentrate on his driving which is where 9/10s of the speed is anyway.

The other cadet engines are WTP and Comer but these are coming to the end of their official homologation (ie legal to race in MSA) term although they will be ok to race for several years yet.

Means though there is some very good kit about for very reasonable money. The expense of karting when you start is not really the kart and engine itself. It's the cost of running to get up to speed.

To race at MSA events you need a license and first you have to pass the ARKS test. I would say at 7/8 the kid will need to get out running at leats twice a month for 6 months to get to the speed needed to pass the ARKS.

Whatever you buy I would recommend buying a new set of slicks and wets so that they come in nice and quick.

As far as MSA racing goes we find the minimum you spend is £100 per day. This includes entry fees, spares, consumables, tyres, transport fuel, and food. This excludes Engine rebuilds and cost of equipment.
