Paul is 'spot on'!
Rule 1 of 'Kart Club' is:-
Keep your cash in your pocket/wallet until you have been to AT LEAST 3 races. Ideally, go to 2 or three different tracks near you!
By then, you'll know what you can and can't race and you'll see what the costs are, etc..
You may find that your lad does not want to race when he looks closely, in that case, you can still buy a cheaper kart and just have fun without the pressures of racing.
So...
1) Tell us where you are and your lad's age 2) Tell us your rough level of technical knowledge. E.g. do you recognise the parts under the bonnet of your car? Can you change a set a brake pads on the car? You don't NEED to be able to do those things, it'll just tell us more about you. 3) We'll tell you the dates of the next races at tracks near you. 4) you tell us that dates that you can come along to see 5) One or two people, here, will offer to meet you at the track and that'll start the process. You don't 'need' someone to introduce you, it just makes it much easier for you to see what's going on.
Then go to two more races and you'll be well on the way!
Please note, Kart Races usually last all weekend with an open practice day occurring on the Saturday of the weekend with the race being the Sunday. Things are more relaxed on the Saturday but MUCH more fun on the Sunday!
If you haven't seen a race before..... you'll be STUNNED! It's the most dramatic, colourful, frantic, excitings spectacular form of racing that you'll find..... especially, if you have met (which you will) some of the drivers!
The process usually is for each 'class' of karts (of which there are many) having 3 (short) 'heats' where the starting positions are evened-out over the three. The 'score' from those three races decides the starting position for the 'final: a slightly longer race of that class). The winner of that..... is the 'winner' for that class!
With the large number of classes and drivers, it's not unusual to see over THIRTY races in a Sunday.... It's not like other racing: we really MOVE between races! There's not enough time to find it boring!
*************
We are not trying to hide the costs..... it's just like other sports.... the range of classes and types of racing mean that there IS no 'standard' cost to racing or karts. We spend what you can (or cannot.....) afford.
