I had a discussion with a big helmet manufacturer about painted helmets and they did confirm all the modern paints were fine to use but they did also say that removal of the main polystyrene shell was a no no as the bonding between the outer shell and the polystyrene is very important in an accident.
Although you will see pictures on helmet painting web sites of helmets as a bare shell they will have been supplied like that and would then be returned for a full build up at an approved supplier.
If you are painting yourself its best to use waterbased of solvent base coats then a 2k laquer try to stay away from tin cans they have a lot of thinner in them so they spray okay and its the thinner that is the aggressive part.
