Nik and IanT are, as always, spot on!

But it's not JUST the engine! Something as simple as 'too much' or 'too little' toe-in (angle formed between the two front wheels) will make a significant difference to straight line speed.

As will the numnber of times and the amount by which you move the steering ON the straight. Each time you 'put input' into the steering position, it's like applying the brakes.

Finally, the gearing makes the difference. If one karter has correctly set his gearing to match the engine's 'sweet spot' rev-range mid-way up the straight, he may well LUNGE upto to the kart in front. He may also lose time round the rest of the track..... but you may not have noticed that part.
