A 110 volt compressor needs more power than a 240v as it draws more current i.e p over v = i
power (wattage) devided voltage (110v) = current drawn from mains, 240v is half the current.
sounds mad i now .
have you tried starting from a empty compressor ? if it has air in it will have probs starting to.

a 1100w 110 volt compressor will draw 10amps
where as a 1100w 240v will only draw 4.5amps , my 2.6kw will run a 240v but no chance on a 110v .

hope this makes sence and not just waffle.
