The original question concerned a 2HP compressor.
Taking a round-up figure, 1 HP was always reckoned, for practical purposes, to be 750W: so 2HP by this "rule of thumb" "HP equates to 1500W, or 1.5kW.

A doubling to allow for "inrush" or "startup" current, as both "AndyOxfordshire" and I suggest results in an initial demand on the generator of some 3000W or 3kW.

Dividing 3000 by 750 to give the approximate HP output required gives a result of 4HP.
