hi khill

ah the joys of novice karting. first off the chain thing, its a good rule to use, but like you say it can have slight hurdles, like cross members, its rare but does happen!....so yeh take a couple of links out or add a couple, depending on which way you look at it!...its better to get a fresh chain but chain splitters are ok if you do it carefully, you can get a hard point in the chain if your too rough with it when splitting, oh and be careful not to push the little needles out all the way, just do it so its still sticking in the outer part of the link, otherwise youll never get it back in again!....youll understand when you get a splitter how it works!

secondly, with the rear sprocket, the ruler is a good guide...a chain aligner laser is better, theyre not too expensive, and to be honest its a cost effective tool. just out of interest how much of the keyway is left under the sprocket carrier? sometimes if you turn the carrier around (ie take it off the axle, flip it 180 degrees and put it back on again) it can give it more bite onto the keyway. on my jkh it was a bit like this, i could never get the keyway fully under the carrier, had to settle for half and half but it worked perfectly well.
