Can a completely flat battery be recharged?

Juust went to crank over the kart and the battery is completely dead. Only getting about 1.5V across it with no load. Don't know how it got so flat although it has been sitting unused in a cold factory over Christmas connected to the loom with the ignition button out (on). The Optimate won't even see it when I plug it in. I thought it might be worth trying to charge it up a bit on a normal battery charger, just until there's enough juice in it for the Optimate to take over. Any thoughts?
