Rafe...

In your case, for me, it's just the terminology. You are NOT saying 'I have too much grip'...what YOU are saying, if that 'I have too much grip AT THE REAR'... that's not what RWR stated and I always complain about 'sloppy terminology' as it leads to confusion. He may have MEANT 'too much grip at the rear' but there will be some people who will read his question and THINK that it's possible to have "too much grip... PERIOD!".

However, if you ARE correct..... can you tell me that YOU would refuse to accept my 'super-qualifiers'........? Because THAT is the logical completion of what you are claiming. I bet you DON'T say you wouldn't accept the 'super qualifers'.....! It also means that you should NEVER complain about someone using 'tyre softener/grip' because all THEY can be doing is making the kart WORSE......... are you SURE you want to say that....?

The 'hopping' is s standard problen with high grip. The solution is to reduce the ratio between the wheelbase and the height of your CofG. You can do that in two obvious ways.... widen the track.... lower your CofG. Both of those will remove the hopping WITHOUT reducing the rear-end-grip significantly. There are other solutions.... e.g., move IN the seat when the hopping is about to start. Where you move TO is controlled by the manner of the hopping..... but.... Also try stiffening/loosening you 'stance' (grip/seating/body-tension) IN the kart as the 'hop' starts. Your body is a SIGNIFICANT part of the mass in the kart and can be used to 'tune' the chassis mid-corner.

The 'diff' argument is specious.... we create the 'effect' of having a diff by use of our high caster and we only need that to promote 'turn-in'. If you STILL need it, mid-corner, then you have the chassis set wrongly! . Logically, your 'hopping' TOTALLY eliminates the effects of having no diff as YOUR inside wheel is off the ground!

Strictly, at your level of karting (a good standard!), you should NOT be suffering 'diff' effects mid-corner anyway! I have no doubt that YOU are cornering with the steering set 'dead-ahead'..... if not.... then you are seriously short of FRONT end grip. Once the kart is 'sliding' to the point where the front wheels are 'dead-ahead', then there IS no differential rotation rate required on the kart! Thus, the 'diff' is irrelevant MID-corner!

I fully understand your problems in a Gbox kart as we used to suffer from it (even at Dunks) when I was racing Gbox 125. The 'cure' we used was to stiffen the kart DIAGONALLY so that the chassis 'twisted' less ounder full loading. Try it to 'dial-out' the 'hop'. There ARE legal ways to so do it: seat-stays being one of them. However, for me, lowering my CofG was the key. Rotate the seat BACKWARD. The lowering of your head and torso will outweigh the raising in height of your legs.
