It depends on tyre make and compound, driver, race format, even pychology. If enough people started saying old tyres were quicker a large element would start using them.
So far, we've only raced on Cadet size tyres, but so far on 7 different makes or compounds, in various size chassis and engine formats.
Bridgestone YJQ & YDS VEGA CADETTI V1 & V2 Dunlop SL3 Maxxis Rookie LeCont
They are all differnt, but only the YJQ and Lecont are definately always faster new. The YDS & probably the SL3 improve after a few sessions and then level off. The Rookies are by far the best tyres, they hardly wear but are fastest, they remain stable throughout a session and we cannot see any time difference on new rubber.
As for the Vega, they are completely inconsistent and many are complete cr*p.
Given the choice you should never gamble on new Vega.
