You'll know because you end up running silly setups or need to go outside your setup range. In my opinion, in the dry you'll be running somewhere near full rear track width and just balance it at the front. In the wet, as narrow as you can and balance with the front. If you're not running something like that it's a good sign that something more significant is wrong, primarily seat position but also caster, alignment or something is bent.
