I've been rather bored with the S1 TV series and so havent watch it for a while but the prospect of seeing Bens return got me turing on. A direct, back to back comparison of the two series.
S1 came first and it was great to see the Audio issue have finally been sorted. No distortion although the level is still a little low in comparison to the adverts.
Pictures-wise, the camera definition looked as low as it always does and in comparison to the Kartmasters, like Alan is using handy cams. Also since when did S1 just have 3 cameramen? The lack of outside pictures forces the editors to take onboards to fill the holes. which doesnt help the story at all. In fact, as per the first few rounds when muting Alan, nothing made a lot of sense. Nice to see some rear facing On boards however. Actually turning Alan on makes little difference. The commentary sticking out over sound of the karts and making very little reference to what we were seeing. A difficult job anyway, but done badly. Most of all, has Samantha got worse? she sounded like she was having an asthma attack all weekend, pausing mid-sentence and inhaling violently.....get her a doctor! Her features were also were very strange, wobbley, still filmed by a dwarf and said dwarf seems to be struggling with framing. Meeting the Edgar family was nice if we didnt have to see our presenters out stretched arm. While overall there was nothing wrong with the coverage it just gave me a massive sense of unprofessionalism.
So to Kartmasters, Hello Louise Goodman, free from Asthma! Need i say the ex-F1 presenter instantly gave a moment of professionalism.
The Feature was an interesting look '96, 3 cameras and onboards....similar to S1 efforts! Very odd link to the opening break which when straight to the next part but then we began to see the racing. Most the camera shots were different S1 effort at the beginning of the year. No pillions in the way and a beautiful high shot at the end of the lap. Disappointed to see only 1 on board in 3 races but see only 1 or 2 karts have cameras.
The audio was well balanced although like S1 it was overall lower than the adverts. The music pieces made gave the show a real atmosphere and gave us a good look at some of the 'outtakes'
Its only been 12 days since the event and so there was every opportunity for the programme to be rushed and being picky there was a couple of dark shots and a couple of strange comments from Ben like comparing Cadet to Tour de France. but after the 2 hours it was very clear who i would want to represent my series.
After all the arguments and attacking Ben, this shows he knows how to make a professional programme and I now understand why he was so upset about the S1 coverage at the start of the year.
Am looking forward to Rotax Max next week
