Yes, a good rib protector is essential. Its possible to crack a rib if you attack a high kerb aggresivley.

I would also suggest you get a neck brace as well. If you have a moderate/even light impact with the tyre wall the lower part of your helmet can crack your collar bone. Hardly anyone uses them, but a neck brace will seriously reduce the risk of this.
