The chain trick does work, but the sprocket isn't very strong in compression and if you overtighten the vice the sprocket will collapse. It's only a 2 minute job, perhaps at a meeting you can find someone with the tool to do it easily.

Also, clean up the nut thread carefully and apply loctite. And don't lose the the little pin when you split the old sprocket off.
