Generators in the pits.

On Sunday I was racing at Forest Edge and the people that pitted behind me had a generator running all morning, eventually I asked if they could move it. I was told that they would but it was the second time that day that they had been asked to move it. As it happened it was not moved but SWITCHED OFF!!! So it was being run – well – just for the sake of it.
The team that pit opposite me also have a generator which is started when they need it and switched off when not required.
I wondered what is the general feeling about running generators?
