I have drilled and re-tapped several of our wheels. 5.1mm hole + the correct pitched tap. I made some bead retainers from round-headed sawn-off bolts and new 'O' rings. Haven't had any problem with the bolts contacting the tyre yet but I made sure that the holes were tapped straight. Works fine.

When it happens the first time, buy a new wheel, then repair the old one and you have a hot spare!
