...don't leave the poor thing in the freezing cold from one month to the next, batteries like to be warm because at the end of the day, they are a chemical reaction and this works better with heat.

The battery in the transponder has three cells and they don't all deteriorate at the same rate so eventually one will give up and refuse to accept a charge.

The battery in the transponder doesn't have a memory eefect but the electronics can get itself in a mucking fuddle, hence the little trick to slap it into action can help.
