If its only a slight bend you can straighten it with a block of wood and a large hammer.

Take the wheels off and look through the tube whilst spinning it, you will see it rise and fall,slow it down until the highest point is at the top then use the block of wood on the axle and hammer down sharply. Keep repeating this using various degrees of hammer pressure as the bend gets less until the bend is virtually gone.

Keeps the axle going for some time anyway, kept us in the race many a time when there was no time to change the axle.
