Not seen one wear out but they do need cleaning from time to time but then there are people who test them on the dyno to match to carb and engine so maybe they do vary.
There are different thoughts on cleaning - some will drop it into a plastic tub of water/caustic soda. this does work well but you need to be careful as it is quite nasty stuff and you have to be able to get rid of the waste.
Others have used a blowtorch to get the carbon deposits loose.
