Not daft at all.

Wall thickness is generally the thing that affects axle flexibility although there are different material differences in some as well.

The thicker the wall, the stiffer the axle.

they are usually marked in stiffness by either a paint colout in the tube or by an etching on the axle.

N would be normal, as against H for hard and S for soft.

Blue would be hard and green would be normal and yellow would be soft.

The colour however is not always consistent between manufacturers.

Measuring the wall thickness is a fairly good was of establishing the hardness.
