As you say archiebald, I think they are designed to stop the helmet trying to lift up at high speeds rather than actually improve laptime. I had a go in a formula ford once and on the main straight i did indeed feel the helmet trying to tilt back. But it's not something i've ever experienced in my kart, even flat out. so i guess it's just for looks in karting!
