hey guys, jus got back after a long discussion with bob
first off charlie, you were doin great this weekend, i just hope you sleep on it and make a decision then. talk to the MSA and give em a good kicking for messin your weekend up. it would be a real shame for you to give up now after a bad meeting, we all have them and are utterly fed up when we go home but it would be a real shame for you to give up a real passion, and something your bloody good at! (having said that your not allowed to woop my ar$e if you come to extreme next year!)
in terms of the meetin i thoroughly enjoyed the on track stuff, i had some great races. having said that we have had 2 big incidents in tkm the last 2 meetings, that were stone wall red flags and should have been stopped immediately, being a marshal i know how difficult it is out there, and there are certain protocols to go through to get a red flag, just like in circuit racing, HOWEVER in circuit racing youve got 2 minutes until the cars are next around, in karting you have 30 seconds. i belive that marshals need greater flexibility to put out a red flag if they want to, but the decision to do so shouldnt be taken lightly....and its something that takes training and experience, one incident can look horific but actually doesnt needa red flag, another can seem pathetic but can need a red flag and medical attention.
in terms of spotting incidents, again ive said it before its very difficult, especially in a pack to spot everything, however in certain cases today especially tkm extreme, those incidents were so obvious, and there were only 10 of us that they should have been picked up, again it comes down to training and actually paying attention during the racing, i know i spotted on acouple of occasions a marshal on his mobile when i was out there racing.
finally, bobs point about everyone complaining about marshals, and not volenteering themselves. to be honest he has a point, you wont belive how difficult it is sometimes to marshal, ive said it before and ill keep on saying it, unless youve dont it then to be honest you have no idea about it. the best thing to do is volenteer for a meeting and see what its like from down there, without having any bias to drivers, if you have an incident try and write a report about it afterwards, i bet you now you will know roughly what happened but you wont remember the kart numbers, and for definate what caused it.
on the circuits they have a system where if a driver does a days marshalling during the year you get 50 points in the championship, that way if you dont do it, you wont win the championship and if you do go and marshal it will give you a whole new perspecive on racing....maybe the same should be done in karting, maybe not the kids marshalling but if a nominated parent did it then it gained their child points in the championship
anyhoo...enough rambling for the day....sod everyone else, im back at hooton next month, i jus hope that people think about it before making any rash decisions, yeh go and race at gyg or 3S, but youll probably be comin back on here saying the same things about other circuits (with the exception of you charlie which is a bit of a different situation)
