I remove the grease from the bearing but leave the side plate in situ as it acts as a shield against dust ,gravel ,etc from entering . Soak the bearing in petrol to get rid of the grease . WD40 is not a load bearing lubricant so yes it will spin well but its not ideal . I use Comma spray grease (more like a thick oil in a spray can) as a bearing lube and it seems to do the job . Available from Halfords , blue can grey lid . Also check out articles on fitting rear axles in the search facility on here as this can be a source of drag also if alignment etc is out ...
