here's my opinion:

a couple of years ago, I was also under the opinion that mag rims made no difference whatsoever towards the performance of the kart over alloy rims, we went through 7 years of TKM racing both at club and super 1 level believing this whilst others were running mag rims (and in some cases, were beating us with those rims).

Then at the end of 2007, we moved into the Formula Blue class and the 2nd hand equipment we bought included a set of mag rims. We didn't put them on at first sticking with alloy rims at the practice day of the 1st race in the class at 3 sisters.

Since as it was a small grid racing that weekend anyway, we decided to try out the mag rims on race day just to see what they're like (same tyres and gearing I must add), went out on sunday and was revving at a much higher rpm at the end of the straight than we were with the alloy rims.

This then lead us to start going down sprocket sizes throughout the day and was fastest driver on the grid by quite a considerable margin by when we reached the final (dnf'd final due to chassis cracking but that's another issue).

a similiar thing happened when I did a guest drive at the Larkhall TKM Super 1 meeting last year, I didn't end up being the quickest but I managed to find myself from going from 0.5 seconds off the pace in TQ to about 0.1/0.2 off by the end of raceday by only changing from alloy (practice tyres) to mag (race tyres) and then reducing sprocket size.

Personally, I haven't noticed any difference in the behaviour of tyre pressurs between alloy and mag. Or was this caused by another issue

So was this showing the difference in rotational mass? Or was this caused by another issue? One thing for sure is that I now believe that rim materials to make a difference.
