Its fine to practice.

the day is split into sessions

Gearbox
Novice Cadet
Experienced Cadet
Novice Junior
Experienced Junior
Novice Senior
Experienced Senior

therefore you are only out with similar people and hopefully this reduces the chances of accidents etc.

The Track is simple to learn, but takes a lifetime to get that last little bit
