Hi Alex,

It was always the norm to check and set new plugs to the correct gap recommended by the manufacturer, so it's something I've always done.

No idea why the new plug had such a wide gap, maybe its just how they come from the factory. I wouldn't have thought you're doing anything that would damage the engine, it hasn't hurt any of ours yet being gapped at 0.4mm.
