People often forget that, even with all the theory, simulations and models, you still need to do miles and miles of testing. What NJB is promoting is a "use what works" principal and a "keep it simple" approach. I couldn't agree more.

However, where we differ (and I think I speak for Itpro too on this one) is that I prefer to attempt to understand the theory such that I can apply knowledge to new situations in the hope of being correct right off the bat more often.

The only caveat I would give to people using NJB's approach is to be careful of the conclusions drawn from testing. Most people don't test correctly nor do enough mileage to draw correct conclusions other than "this change worked in this particular set of conditions". In this example, as others have stated, it is impossible to conclude whether it is the material bringing benefit or some other factor(s). NJB's method is of benefit here because he simply states, "it works for me".
