Many months ago I snapped the axle on my Biland and I still havnt' got around to fixing it.. I have a new axle and bearings and have started the job but I just can't get around to finishing.

I have actually 'built' the axle with all the parts (bearings, sprocket, brake disk) etc, but found everything is so loose, that it might be a better idea to mount everything to the chasis first and then 'slide' the axle thought.

And this brings me onto a question about the bearings and the carriers.. I notice that the outer surface of the bearing is curved and this matches the shape of the carrier.. Once the bearing is in the carier, the bearing will swivel, a bit like a ball joint in the carrier.

I just wonder if the bearing SHOULD swivil like this? Do you do the carrier up so tight that the bearing is 'gripped' and can't move.. Or do you leave it so that the bearing can move inside the carrier?

I am starting to wonder if this is the route of the problem? I always had my carriers up tight, which ment as the axle bent under load, forces would build up in a small area.. Where as if the bearings could swivel, perhaps the 'bend' would be spread over the whole axle.

Am I onto something here.. Or do I simply do them up tight, so they are rock solid?
