I know the problem you have with putting the tyre on with the tongs. The tongs slip off the rim.

My method is with the tongs closed and in place. slightly open the tongs, hold one of the tong arms between your legs whilst kneeling, place one hand on the central pivot of the tongs to keep them in place on the rim and use the other hand to open the tongs. This will get the tyre approx 75% on, at this point the tongs will stay on the rims, now you can use both hands to open the tongs fully and get the tyre on the rim.
