I raced with a cracked sternum (breast bone, the big lump of bone between the ribs). By the end of the meeting I was walking around like an old man. It took 3 weeks before I could stand up straight again and 6 weeks or so more before I had full mobility back.

Of course, most people are just soft and don't have cracked ribs at all. Usually it's just bruising of the cartilage, the pain from which typically subsides within a few days, although the injury is easily aggravated again.
